Dan Wolf's 14AL-2003 Launch Report

I agree with all that Kevin and others said. It was a pretty good meet. What I really enjoyed about it was the great group of people competing and running the range. Everyone jumped in and helped out and worked together. I couldn't have run this meet without the great support the competitors AND non-competitors gave me. Although I was stressed quite a bit that we couldn't keep to the pre meet schedule, particularly for tracking, the participants took it all in stride. Thanks to everyone for serving range duty, helping set up, tear down, time, track, etc. In addition to the 120 or so contest flights, we had about 90 sport flights with everything from a 1/4A to K motors. What impressed me was the quality of the flights, low power, mid power, high power, and contest flights. The DQ rate was low for the contest flights and I don't recall any sport flights that went really bad. All of the HPR flights I recall worked quite well.

The other thing that struck me was that except for myself, all of the contestants and those running the range this weekend had little or no contest experience prior to 1996 when WOOSH began. At the first couple 14AL meets, I relied heavily on the Millers and folk from Launch Crue to run the meet. Now, WOOSH has grown it's own core of contest knowledgeable members. I'm not talking about BTCs, or Pink Book lawyers, but people who know how how to man and run a contest range with a good understanding of the rules. That includes our ever growing group of trackers and craftsmanship judges. We also have been able to integrate sport flying including HPR into our contest range operations. Regardless of how WOOSH finishes the contest year, I'm proud of the capabilities and competencies that we have achieved in the past 8 years. You only have to attend a meet in Michigan or St. Louis to see what we have accomplished.
