March 11th, 2001 Launch Report

Informal WOOSH launch at Bong

Dean Roth:

A few people went to Bong on Sunday, March 11. The ground is still hard below the top couple of inches. The thawed surface was wet and muddy. The brush along most of northern side of lot E has been cut to the ground and removed.

Paul Smith:

Well, much of the brush there is simply laid flat along the ground. That's a good thing, because it gives you something to walk on to stay above the 6" deep ice water beneath. Of course, that area will be closed in a month anyway, right? Anyway, some kind of boots are a must for recovery in that area.

I flew four rockets on Sunday. My PML Black Brant VB flew on a G64-7 for a nice flight (#5). My PML Small Endeavour ("Dear Venus") flew on an H128 medium delay (flight #5 also), my first high power flight with anything other than my NCR Archer. Good high flight (RockSim says 1800 feet), nice recovery - but I broke a fin off. It'll be easy to repair, though.

As the winds had gotten pretty high by that point, I laid off more flights of rockets with expensive motor casings, and launched to model rockets instead. My cloned Astron Avenger had a nice high flight on a C6-0 staged to a B6-6. Fifteenth flight for that rocket, which also lost a fin on landing. In addition, my Cherokee D clone flew on a D12-7, 4th flight.
