Roth's 01-10-01 Launch Report
Yes, I went rocket flying today at Bong.
Ground Wind: 19.999 mph
Temperature: Cold and colder
Snow Depth: 12"-18"
Ticks and Mosquitoes: Zero
Crazy People: Dean, Fred and Darlene
The view along 142 was pretty.
First rocket into the air was my "impossible to kill" AeroTech Inititator. This rocket hung in a tree for several months in 2000, and
was soaked by rain many times. Today it flew on an F50. It drifted quite a ways but was recovered.
I badgered Fred into flying something. The rocket used a streamer and a B motor. It, too, drifted a good distance. We discovered deep snow with
liquid water beneath it. The rocket was recovered.
Fred flew his Blobbo on an A8 to avoid a long walk through deep snow to recover it. Actually, Darlene and I would avoid a long walk through
deep snow to recover it. The rocket went up 20-25', fell, hit my car, and landed a few feet away. Hmmm. Perhaps a larger motor? No damage to
car or rocket.
The Blobbo flew better on an B motor, but when the rocket hit the snow/ice in the parking lot a fin broke free. A little CA should fix
it.
Then Fred and I broke out our Snitch saucers and burned several C6 motors and one B6. The Snitches seemed to fly rather well even with the
wind. Fred's Snitch cracked and broke on its last flight.
After 1.5 hours of fun we packed and left. I have a couple of photos I'll forward to Scott for the web site. Someone had been flying rockets
recently as we found the remains of two Estes rockets on top of the
snow.
