WOOSH members rang in the New Year with a theme launch at Certified Peat and Sod dedicated to the “fat boy” type of rockets on January 3rd. 2004. Walt Evans began his day by flying his Quest Big Betty named “Betty Boop” on a C6-5 motor. The rocket flew well but drifted into the top of a nearby tree. Although a valiant effort was made to recover the rocket using multiple painters’ poles and duct tape the rocket is still a Christmas ornament. Walt also flew a stretched fat boy named “Attaboy” on a D12-5 that made it back to the ground to be recovered. Walt also flew his Fliskit’s Spitfire rocket that flew straight even though it looked crooked on the pad.
Greg Carter had a bit of bad luck when his Quest Zenith two stager failed to light the upper stage. The rocket suffered damage to the plastic payload section but it will fly again. Greg also built a stretched fat boy that was named “Biggerboy” and flew nicely on a D12-5. Greg doesn’t subscribe to the Atkins diet. He brought along a big bag of Bagels and cream cheese for everyone to enjoy. Thanks Greg!
Scott Goebel took the fat boy theme to heart by bringing along four fat boys to the launch. One named “fireboy” with a flaming paint job flew on a C6-3. A newly created fat boy with the letters arranged to read ”YO BATFE” flew on a C6-3. A 24mm. version with a lightning paint job flew on a C11-5. Last but not least a Public Enemy “Fat Boy” was launched on a F50-4.
Joe Kassel turned up to fly his Mach 12 on a “Mach” B6-4 motor several times with good results. Dean Roth flew his Estes bandit twice on A6-4 Quest motors. Fred Jarosch flew his Quest Super Eagle on a C6-3. Fred also defied the laws of nature by flying his Estes Executioner on an E9-6 off a 1/8” rod with good results.
Many other fun flights were made and several new punch lines were added to club member’s repertoire of rocket jokes and one-liners. WOOSH holds model rocket launches at Certified Peat and sod on the first Saturday of every month. We have scheduled a theme for each launch this year. March 6th will feature flights of the Quest X30 space plane model. Our April 3rd launch will feature scale models of any type.
Come on out and have fun flying rockets!
