WYWH-2002 Point Standings
WYWH-2002 Meet Champions

Yes, once again the WOOSH die-hards prove their ability to compete under any conditions. My one regret is that Wisconsin is geologically stable, so it is unlikely we'll have the opportunity to show our prowess by holding a Regional during an earthquake.

The weekend was a never-ending series of choosing the best of undesirable options for your humble Contest Director, from the eleventh-hour change in range times to the decision to fly today. I apologize if the rather chaotic conditions--weather and administrative--caused any inconvenience for any of the competitors. In spite of the wind and the chill the general mood all weekend seemed to be very positive, and I appreciate the support of all in attendance.

One of the decisions I made today was *not* to calculate the contest points at the restaurant. I'll put those together over the next couple of days and post them here. I do, however, have an official announcement regarding WYWH #1...

C Rocket Glide (multi-round) and B Payload have been officially postponed. Contestants who were registered for WYWH will have the opportunity to fly these events during specific time periods at 14AL02 in June. Due to the time constraints, in force to reduce the impact on 14AL, the following modifiers will be in effect:

C Rocket Glide (multi-round)--each contestant will be permitted no more than two official flights. The good news is that no returns are required for times to count.

B Payload--each contestant will be permitted *one* official flight, that is to say one flight for which the model was tracked and closed.

If any WYWH contestant is unable to attend during the times permitted for completing these events, you may have your models proxy-flown. Let me know if this is the case.

Contest Notes

(1) No radio-controlled entries will be permitted.

(2) NAR Standard Payloads will be provided. They will be made of 2.75" lengths of BT-20 tube (o.d. .736") plugged and filled with sand to a weight of one ounce as measured by my electronic scale (the same one I used to weigh the eggs for Egglofting last fall). This scale has a tolerance of 0.1 ounce; all payloads will register less than 1.1 ounces per the scale readout. Contestants may provide their own payload(s), but any such payloads will, prior to flight, be measured and weighed using the same scale as the rest.

(3) All registered contestants will be expected to serve one shift of range duty each day. Minimum standing duties are RSO/LCO, Timer, and Tracker. RSO/LCO and Timer shifts will be two hours long; Tracker shifts will be 75 minutes long, overlapped to account for walk-out/walk-in time. Once all duty shifts are filled, surplus contestants will be used as extra Timers, sent out to train as Trackers, pressed into check-in/results duty, or used to reduce shifts to one hour in length.

Specific Event Rules/Notes

C ROCKET GLIDER DURATION (MR) -- The model may not drop or eject anything other than propellant and must employ glide recovery. You are permitted to make three official flights but may only use two different models to make them, so at least one flight *must* be returned.
Though the maximum time for each flight in the first round is 240 seconds, full time aloft will be recorded for purposes of record-breaking. The current records for this event are:
        A Division: 118 seconds
        B Division: 99 seconds
        C Division: 240 seconds
        T Division: 39 seconds
Any flight equaling or exceeding 240 seconds will be recorded as MAX and treated as 240 seconds for the purpose of event scoring. If there is a tie for first place after three flights, the tied contestants may elect to make an additional flight (provided they
still have one of their two models left) with no maximum time. The highest total in seconds will be the winner.

B PAYLOAD -- The payload must be completely enclosed in the model throughout the flight, and must be recovered by a parachute sufficient to return it in a safe manner. If we use the rule on ejected motor casings (Rule 9.2) as a guide, the parachute needs to have an area of at least 5 square centimeters per gram of mass. This works out to a parachute diameter of about 6 inches for the payload alone--larger if the model and spent casing are coming down with it and/or you cut a spill hole in it.
As with Egglofting, the payload must be extracted from the model in the presence of a contest official.
Tracking will be done from 1pm to 3pm each day.
